Jeanne Morningstar Kent

I  recently came across this Native American artist, Jeanne Morningstar Kent, while perusing the local "Kickstarter"projects. This artist works with Gourds, exquisitely illustrating the stories of the Wabanaki  people on the exterior of specially selected hard-shelled  varieties.. Jeanne Morningstar Kent resides in Winchester, Connecticut and has been awarded a small grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts. Her Gourd pieces can be found in the museum collections of The Institute of American Indian Studies, Washington, CT., Roger Williams University, Bristol, Rhode Island, and The Chimney Point Museum in Addison Vermont.
She has initiated a "Kickstarter" project to help her defray the costs of creating these gorgeous pieces. (Please consider supporting this project! The great thing about Kickstarter is that a little donation can go a long way!) You can read about her painstaking  process from seed cultivation to finished work on her website www.morningstarstudio9.com. Her website is also a  great resource of information on the history of this craft and Wabanaki design, symbols, and stories. Hopefully you'll be inspired by the imagery to put her on your Christmas list!

Keeping it in the Gourd Vein.

Jenna Cianciola- Graphite Gourd

The Gourd!

I thought I'd give a sneak peek of a work progress by one of our high school Foundation students Jenna Cianciola. Jenna is developing finely tuned observational skills on her first selected project. Students who work in the foundation course are allowed a choice of working on a cast drawing or a natural object during the first 8 weeks. Jenna has selected a very challenging object. The Gourd!!! (Must be in the air:)). Nice work Jenna!!!
